The Eby Darlene Memorial Project
Darlene Eby (March 2, 1940-July 27, 2024) was a friend, mentor and Mama to ARTS students for over 18 years. The project named in her honor is a three-story building, 68 by 33 feet in dimension (including staircases).
The ground floor will be a faculty house that ARTS Principal Dave Eby can use and will also be available for other resident and visiting lecturers. The second and third floors will be temporary men’s dormitory space (our biggest need at present) and then eventually a ladies’ dormitory when a permanent men’s residence is called for.
Darlene always had a special place in her heart for ARTS women students. The two upper floors will provide housing for 14 students each (28 total), in 14 rooms, each with study space. Our men currently utilize provisional housing in two classrooms that are now needed for administration and teaching.
The reason for a vertical structure is limited space on our campus and the high cost of additional land. The vertical trend is seen all over Kampala where land prices have sky-rocketed over the last 20 years. Tonny Mirro, the ARTS Construction Manager is overseeing the project.
